The original event in March had to be cancelled due to snow and ice, but finally on 21st April 21 club members and guests enjoyed an excellent Thai take away from Simply Thai of Manningtree as well as live music from three of our members, Fergus O Sullivan, Rob Turvil and Ben Constable. Even the weather was pleasant.
I would like to thank all those who turned up and helped lay the tables, serve and wash up. Your efforts made this a memorable evening for everyone, including the organisers!
We hope to have other similar events later in the year, whilst the weather is still good. If you have any suggestions, please pass them on to me via the committee@ardleighsc.co.uk or using our website.
The 9th Colchester Scout Group, which has a fleet of 14 boats at Ardleigh reservoir, is urgently looking for a sailing instructor with an RYA permit who would be able to oversee sailing training. The group is willing to support the right candidate in obtaining the necessary qualifications. Volunteers would need to be vetted by DBS and do some online safeguarding training. Please contact Yvette Wetton if you feel you could help in this matter or know of someone who might be able to help. Thanks!
Being the first Sunday of May, its also Family and Social Sailing which will also run between 10:30 and 4:00.
This is a family-friendly event that take place on the first Sunday from May to October. See the Club Calendar for full details. The atmosphere is relaxed enough for you to do what you want providing you stay in sight of the rescue boat if you want to be eligible for rescue. These sessions are great for informal coaching be it parents teaching their kids or adults crewing and helming on each others' boats. Boat swaps have also been known! The Safety boat is out, various club boats are available for use and hopefully a few of the 'older hands' are available to help you with any nautical conundrums!! The safety boat helm normally organises an easy course for beginners to negotiate. Many families arrive in time to picnic and chat as well as getting on the water for some fun.

Following the success of the recent improvers' training course, Ardleigh Sailing Club is pleased to announce that a week of training sessions for beginners is now being offered to both members and non-members alike. The training will run from Monday the 28th of August through to Friday the 1st of September and consist of afternoon sessions. The cost for five half day training sessions is £125.00 per person for members and £175.00 for non-members. There will be a maximum of 5 places. Georgia Grice, a well experienced and RYA-qualified coach, will be running the sessions and will develop course content based on the standard RYA approach. Attendees are welcome to sail their own boats, providing they are suitable for the reservoir, or make use of the club fleet which includes Teras, Picos and Argos. Numbers are strictly limited to 5, so please do get in touch by Thursday the 17th of August to book your place by emailing training@ardleighsc.co.uk
Attendees will be expected to pay a £50 deposit to secure their booking, the remainder to be payable on the first day of training. This is a great opportunity to develop dinghy sailing skills from scratch, so do get in touch if you're interested.
The committee has decided to sell off a number of older club boats that have not been used much over the last few years. Members will be given the first option to make an offer for these dinghies via blind auction. The auction starts on Friday the 28th of July and ends on Monday the 14th of August. Bidders must clearly state which boat they are bidding for, how much they are bidding and of course their name and contact details. Bids must be posted in a sealed envelope labelled 'ASC Blind Auction 2017' and posted into the club post box by 5pm on the end date. Late bids cannot be accepted. At the end of the auction period, the highest bidder will be informed and expected to make suitable payment arrangements with the club treasurer, Richard Biggs. Any boats that are not sold via the blind auction will be disposed of as cost-effectively as possible by the committee. The boats are: Wayfarer 'Apache', sail number 6118, dinghy berth J11. Wayfarer 'Bluebottle', sail number 8301, dinghy berth J13. Wayfarer no name, sail number unknown, dinghy berth J15. Enterprise no name, sail number 21631, dinghy berth J10. Additionally, member Steve Bourner would like to donate his GP14, berth J12, to another club member for free. If you are interested, please submit an expression of interest in the same manner as for the blind auction, in the same time frame. A winner will then be picked at random. You are advised to come and have a look at these boats if at all interested. Happy Bidding!
